A gentleman, who is a scientist by profession,
wrote to me after reading my homepage: "Your characterization of astrology
as a probabilistic science is most welcome to me. Most of the population
in the west, even the ones that know their Sun sign dismiss astrology as
superstitious nonsense and many of those that do accept it expect the astrologer
to be 100% correct 100% of the time ("but you're an astrologer, you
should have known that my dog would be getting sick this week"). Looking
at prediction as a probability puts it in a much more realistic perspective."
He is so correct! People either fanatically
dismiss astrology or fanatically embrace it! There are few astrology practitioners
or fans with a rational and scientific spirit! This has led, in the last
century or two, to today's sorry state of affairs, where astrology has
the stigma of being a superstition! There are two thing to be done today
- (1) to promote scientific temper among astrologers and astrology fans
and (2) to make the general populace (and the scientific community) realize
that astrology is a credible subject worthy of research!
